GOLD COAST MULTI-ARTS HUB CELEBRATES ITS OFFICIAL OPENING WITH A SPECTACULAR SHOWCASE OF LOCAL ART, MUSIC, FASHION, PERFORMANCE, DESIGN, WRITING AND FOOD.

The Gold Coast’s creative scene comes alive on Friday 11 November, 5.00pm to 11.00pm as various individuals and collectives band together to celebrate rabbit + cocoon's official launch (11/11/11).

rabbit + cocoon is a new multi-arts hub at 23 Hillcrest Parade Miami providing spaces for creative individuals and collectives and resources for projects and events. For the launch r+c have formed partnerships with individuals and organisations to bring to the public an exciting program of exhibitions, musical performances, fashion shows, film screenings and book launches and an arts market.

Among the featured collectives coming together on the 11th of November are artist-run initiatives Flat White Spaces, Lmtd Space, Comb Artspace and Art Harvest, who will be showcasing over one hundred artworks by 56 emerging Australian artists in their ambitiously curated exhibition Project FiftySix.

A rabbit + cocoon project, Miami Marketta Arts + Fashion is an evening outdoor market showcasing local designers, artists, fashion designers and independent businesses to the Gold Coast public. Since it began in September, the monthly market has attracted a devoted local following, and will be a main feature of the r+c launch, as well as two fashion parades by Queensland College of Art fashion students, and Emma Milikins + Love Street.

Cultural organisations ABC Open and The Queensland Arts Council have also teamed up to produceArtist by Artist, a film project that saw 20 Queensland artists produce video documentaries on one another’s arts process. The event marks the film's Gold Coast launch, where audiences will get to meet some of the participating artists.

The jam-packed second edition of Gold Coast Creative, a magazine which continues to profile local artists, designers and creative community projects in interesting ways, will also be available. Produced by Griffith University and Sanctuary Cove Publishing, the magazine aims to promote a dynamic cultural perception of the Gold Coast and help launch fresh links with the community. Local favouritesNaked City-Guide and Trunk Junk Quarterly will also be on sale at the event.

Adding musical vibrancy to the program’s festivities, Gold Coast musicians Natalie Weir and the Beekepers, Colourfide and Valley Floor will entertain audiences all evening. Light food and drinks will be available at our on-site coffee hub The Shed, and be sure to look out for our visual and impromptu performances during the night. The much-anticipated rabbit + cocoon’s official launch (11/11/11)will be opened by Cr. Greg Betts (Division 12 GCCC) and Donal Fitzpatrick, Head of Queensland College of Art.

Miami Marketta Arts+Fashion

Miami Marketta Arts+Fashion launched on Friday 12th August and will be a monthly event held on the second Friday of each month between the hours of 5 and 10pm. You will be entertained by local musicians on the Hillcrest Stage - supported by GCMIA - as well as a selection of talented buskers. On the fashion front, there will be parades from our local talent and the opportunity to purchase directly from the designer. The focal point of the arts creative is the 48 individual exhibition spaces from local painters, graphic designers, fashion designers and collectors of authentic vintage. The coffee hub will be open and serving up amazing coffee as well as cheese platters and sensational finger food. You won't go hungry with external food vendors coming in with their selection of gourmet goods to fill your bellies.

Artist by Artist

The Artist by Artist project is a collaboration between ABC Open and the Queensland Arts Council where 20 Queensland based artists were challenged to produce video stories capturing the creative forces that drive their fellow artists. The result is 20 beautifully told and inspiring vignettes: artists’ lives through artists’ eyes. Come and meet the Gold Coast artists, see their films on the big screen and celebrate ABC Open’s 1st year and 50 years of the Queensland Arts Council.

Flat White Spaces

The Flat White Spaces project is a platform for emerging and established Gold Coast artists to exhibit their work in under-utilized spaces within the region. It is hoped that with time and support from the community, Flat White Spaces can assist artists of the Gold Coast to get the exposure, recognition and support they deserve.

Comb

Comb Gallery has been established to provide the Southern Gold Coast Region with a place for the exhibition of emerging and established contemporary artists. We look to contribute to the progress of the contemporary art environment, while assisting in education and empowerment for both exhibitors and viewers. We wish to provide local artists with a place for networking and interaction, while contributing to the development and perception of contemporary art forms.

Lmtd Space

LTMDS mission is to unite Artists around Australia by hosting exhibitions with galleries and other spaces. Connect youwith information about what is going on in your city as well as showcase Australians best hidden and emerging artists.

Natalie Weir

Musically sparse, haunting, a taste of old time folk and rollicking country, the stories of this singer/songwriter will leave you feeling like you have read her secret diary you found hidden under her bed. Natalie often performs with her collective ‘The Beekeepers’ a lively bunch of pirate looking folk she has hand picked from her favourite local bands, she also performs with just a lone guitar and voice so close you feel like you could reach out and touch them. Having performed around Australia over the past 6 years since returning from overseas where her musical journey began in backpacker bars, bus stops and busking on street corners throughout Europe and North America, she has performed beside artists such as Xavier Rudd and Dirty Lucy, and will often be found playing around the local venues on the Brisbane, Gold Coast and Byron Bay circuit. This travelling gypsy has recently put down the boots and has spent the last couple of years working hard with blood sweat and tears self- producing and recording her 2^ndEP ‘Paper Cranes’ which will be released at the beginning of 2012.

Valley Floor

Valley Floor's psychedelic punk will catapult any naked mind into a pulp fiction washed, tie dyed ball of bliss. Jesse Bailey and Dan Briffa (Rogerthat) along with Clay Macdonald (Angus & Julia Stone, The Beautiful Girls) spent much of 2010's summer creating 30 fresh and clean tracks in a poster walled laundry in the depths of Tallebudgera Valley.Despite having toured the globe's tropical sphere a few times over, Valley Floor isn’t looking for inspiration by sucking on the sun-drenched stems of cow patty magic that reside in their preferred jam hiatus. Rather, each member is brought to the pinnacle of joy by playing to friends in paddocks and driveways around their home turf.

Colourfide

Colourfide are an independent funky roots collective harvested from the smooth sands of the Gold Coast and fashioned in a dusty warehouse in the Northern Territory. An instrument swapping ball of creative energy and complete with 3 lead singers, their live show is renowned as a dynamic journey for the senses. Colourfide’s blend of creamy harmonies and bright catchy choruses over a funky bed of fat flavoured drums and badass basslines has begun to create a stir right around the country. The bands’ first foray into the commercial world has garnered Triple J success and considerable media attention. Their first EP sparked an ambition which saw Colourfide on the road to the desert for a chance to take a breath, find isolation and cultivate the unique sound which defines the journey. Since returning six months later, Colourfide have taken to stages with a fresh perspective and an exciting new set.The forthcoming EP will mark the bands first release since January 2010 and the tour will see Colourfide bringing their distinctive stage chemistry and charisma to towns across the East Coast between Cairns and Melbourne in October/November 2011. Over the past 12 months their music has been played on numerous community and national radio stations across the country. They have won over countless venues, played to crowds as diverse as Australia will allow and built themselves a reputation as an irresistible excuse to loosen up and party down. Whether they’re working a catchy hook or laying down deep, immersive grooves, the guys know exactly how to entertain a crowd.

Trunk Junk Quarterly

A collection of words and picture expressing what we live for. Surf . Skate. Snow. Wake. Art . Design and Music, everything we love . we brought to you in a visually explicit , this is a quartley magazine , showcasing up and coming and already established talents.In way that will make you wanna glue your copy of TJQ to your tv . your dog or what ever good, or if you girlfriend get boring even her. There so much to read you won't and can't stop reading.

Gold Coast Creative

The second annual Gold Coast Creative is a contemporary, functional and stylish magazine, showcasing the unique design strengths and diversity of the Gold Coast. The 2011 edition features a colourful and creative mix of editorial content –emerging artists, groundbreaking architecture and innovative community projects – and once again highlights the growth of 'the arts' in the region.

Queensland College of Art

The QCA Fashion show consists of four ranges, designed and produced by QCA Gold Coast Bachelor of Digital Media students. Boneyard Apparel is a range of customised vintage clothing by Kaz Mihaka and Nell Routledge. Typosaur is a range of typographic tees by Per Oyvind Weum. Lepeta is a range of tribal handmade jewellery and outfits by Rebecca Reid. Presence is a ready-to-wear range by Yuan Yao.

Naked City Guide is an independent publication that fills an unmet demand for a tasteful and discerning insider’s perspective of the Gold Coast. For locals and visitors alike, Naked profiles all the places that contribute to the creative undercurrent of our city – cafés, restaurants, galleries, boutique stores, live music venues and more. Written, photographed and designed entirely by young Gold Coasters, each venue is chosen purely on the basis of its local appeal. Building on the success of the print edition, Naked City Guide will soon be releasing its next edition online. Look out for the launch of the website in late November!

The Directors are currently seeking creative individuals and arts organisations interested in leasing individual or co-shared studios for short, mid and long term use.

We seek artists who are dedicated and actively pursuing a professional arts career.

These include: visual artists, fashion designers, jewellers, graphic designers, illustrators, musicians, film-makers, photographers, stylists, writers, live art performers, not-for-profit organisations, artsworkers, creative producers etc.

The property holds fourteen warehouses, which in 2011 will be gradually be transformed into:

Whilst calling studio 8 home, Emma also works overseas. She is currently on a 1 month manufacturing trip, working on her summer range. Emma's concept of design is free spirited, when wearing Emma's creations, you feel free, you want to dance like a little girl again, not a worry in the world! Joining Emma in her studio is local designer Tara Fletcher of Love st.

Love St is feminine and sexy, with long flowing dresses to off the shoulder retro inspired kaftans. Love St exudes confidence/

it is really hard to imagine that not long ago this was basically a storage shed.

Complete with resident cactus, the studio has a great display area, with the rear of the studio, home to 2 local fashion designers. Tara Fletcher and Emma Milikins now call studio 8 home.

Just to update interested creatives that we are having the rabbit+cocoon open day on Saturday 16th October from 1pm-4pm at 23 Hillcrest Parade, Miami Gold Coast. This is your chance to view our studios and creative workspaces in progress and hear about the programs we have in store for the hub.
We are also interested to hear your feedback and ideas, and to discuss your projects or proposals in person!

Artists invited to view our spaces include: visual artists, musicians, fashion designers, film-makers, graphic designers, writers, curators and performers. Also welcome are artists and arts organizations interested in staging one-off projects, events and launches in 2011.
